Gold
As
to be expected, we specialise in only the finest hand made
gold jewellery at Jewel
Africa – in fact as much as 70% of the jewellery in
the store is hand made on the premises. Many of the largest
gold mines in the world are found in South Africa, and gold
has symbolised power and wealth since antiquity.
Quite apart from being used in jewellery, much of the worlds
gold supplies are stored in bullion vaults around the globe.
Great value has been attached to gold over the millennia -
over 200 pounds of gold was found in the tomb of Tutankhamen.
Gold is said to increase the wearer’s self-confidence
and this precious metal is also associated with love and faithfulness,
the epitome of a perfect gift. It is believed that gold increases
the healing properties of all stones, which is why gemstones
set with gold have a very special energy.
Platinum
Nothing
sets off a diamond, or any precious stone for that matter,
like platinum. Its pure white brilliant lustre, its rarity,
elegant beauty and unmatched strength ensure your diamond
is truly “forever”. Probably because of this there
has been a global trend towards platinum jewellery in recent
years.
Platinum is 30 times more rare than gold… a coveted
treasure that is found in only a few places around the world,
with 75% of it coming from South Africa. This exquisite metal
is rare, distinctive and timeless and it takes ten tonnes
of ore to mine one single ounce! It is estimated that if all
the platinum ever mined were poured into an Olympic swimming
pool, it would scarcely cover your ankles!
Most platinum is 95% pure, which means it’s hypoallergenic
and great for sensitive skins, as well as incredibly resistant
to tarnish. All platinum jewellery carries a hallmark applied
by the assay office, your guarantee of quality, and in SA
common designations for marking platinum jewellery are Plat,
Plat 950, Pt or Pt 950, all of which denote 95% platinum purity.
Platinum is a naturally white metal, unlike white gold that
is artificially coloured by adding other metals. It is also
denser than gold, and technically no other metal can compare
for strength. Platinum requires a higher level of craftsmanship,
as the techniques for working gold jewellery simply cannot
be applied to platinum. It takes great skill to work with
it, however its unique properties enable the skilled craftsman
to create innovative and original designs.
Platinum’s origins in history go back nearly 2000 years
to the pre-Columbian Indian civilisations of South America.
Modern tradition begins with the European court jewellers
of the 18th century, Edwardian era and Art Deco period. And
the modern age of platinum has a proud heritage in the likes
of Cartier, Tiffany, Fabergé, Van Cleef and Arpels,
Buccellati and other premium brands; as well as gracing the
Crown Jewels of the Kings of England, Tsars of Russia, Emperors
of Japan and the Duchess of Windsor.
Over time, a special relationship has developed between platinum
and diamonds. The beautiful white metal reflects and enhances
the natural colour of diamonds; and together with its rarity,
purity and strength has made platinum the choice for engagement
rings and bridal jewellery.
But it doesn’t end there – currently the fashion
runways of the world are inspiring a passion for platinum.
Its silver white lustre and irresistible appeal along with
its rarity mean that platinum is fast becoming a firm fashion
favourite for trendsetters - borne out by the large number
of top celebs and red carpet winners dripping in diamond jewels
mounted in platinum.
